A couple of nights ago, I went out to the barn and was met with my usual greeting by the goats – jumping up on the wall, anxious for food and attention. But there were only five little heads peering at me – where was Lovie? It didn’t take long to find her:

Our poor girl has been quite skittish since she had the horn scur removed – she’s still healing from it and doesn’t really want to be petted much. But she was very compliant about letting me rescue her from her feeder cage! And actually, since then, she’s been asking for pets and affection, so that’s been an unexpected benefit.
This incident reinforced to us that we really needed to raise the feeder up. It was still at the same height that we had initially installed it when the girls were tiny babies! We moved it out of the stall and into the larger pen area, near their grain trough. They are really happy with it, and so are we, because there’s much less waste going on now.

The interesting thing was that Lovie was not panicked while trapped – she wasn’t crying out or struggling. She actually seemed kind of embarrassed, more than anything else. So I think she’s particularly pleased with the new location of the feeder – she can’t get herself into that predicament again!
